The New York Special Unit has confirmed that they were keeping tags on high profile rappers or Hip Hop insiders such as Jay-z, Diddy and 50 cent. They have records of their whereabouts when in NYC, all their cars license plates and where they love to hang out at night. The name of the unit is the Rap Intelligence Unit, under the Gang Intelligence Unit.
The Unit shares intelligence with major cities like Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Atlanta. The whole idea started when a lot of hip hop crimes went unsolved like the murders of Biggie and Tupac and disturbances related to Hip Hop in Miami during the 2001 Memorial Day Weekend. Ever since, all Police Departments have been joining forces in trainings and intelligence.
The Unit is also connecting rappers' lyrics to their crimes and using it as probable cause to initiate an investigation, knowing that most of those rappers are faking them anyway just to get some street credibility.
Ok this is my problem with it, and just like Russel Simmons said it it's called "Cultural Profiling", close to harassment actually. How can you trust the insight of that department when obviously obsession is guiding their investigation. We all know how the CIA tried to push Dr. Martin Luther King to suicide or just get some dirt on him to embarrass him publicly. From now on we will question every arrests they make just like I questioned the arrest on Prodigy for drug and gun possession, he later claims that the Hip Hop Police was more interested in inside information on 50 Cent and offered him a deal to set up his boss for a reduced sentence.
